The History Of The Shima

In the early 90's a little breeding accident created amazement and the most beautiful healthy joyous puppies were born - The Shima!
Since that time we have methodically, systematically and responsibly developed the Shima breed with the guidance of our Veternarian.

Our first Shima's were born in 1996. At that time they were not registered or numbered. So I went to work.

We started for the first time in 2004, with the help of other breeders have been able to breed Shima to Shima. We were excited beyond belief.

Shima's are very loyal, great family pets. Protective, intelligent, and they are playful for many years. Children of all ages are able to enjoy this delightful breed.

We found that by breeding two commonly inbred breeds the Maltese and the Shih-Tzu, there was a great effect on the imperfections, which were created by the down line breeding practices. These imperfections were virtually diluted to the point of non-existence.

So the game was on; what did we like best in the two breeds, and what would be our goal in creating a healthy, beautiful, companion breed of dogs? Would the new breed become popular? How would we get the new breed recognized?

Well we hit home runs in all areas:

If you read on you will learn of our successful efforts to develop our Shima breed. Through very select and careful breeding our Shimas are beautiful, healthy and a fantastic companion breed of dog.

No problem with popularity as our Shima breed is now in high demand and loved by all. All who see our ShimaPuppies.com Shimas are immediately attracted and wind up owning one.

We now have our Shima breed recognized, registered and numbered by the Continental Kennel Club.

Success in all areas! We are thrilled beyond belief!

Our Goals:

Hair:

Human hair would work out great, no shedding, no allergic reaction by the more sensitive pet owners, management such as tangling, grooming, and length the hair would grow, became an objective.

Texture of the hair became a priority, loosing the harsher coats and creating a lush silky easy to manage coat. Their hair is not like a Shih-tzu nor a Maltese, it has a way of its own. Softer and fluffier then the other two breeds.

Color of Hair:

We like color, the more the better, there are now Reds, Browns, Grays, Silvers, Black, White, Golden, Creams, and any combination of these, some even having up to 5 different colors on one coat.

***They are chameleon in that they change colors every winter and summer. depending on the length of their hair. If you let the hair grow out, it will drape to the floor. We have one dog that got its first tangle after it was 8 months old. When the snow came, I could not keep him out of it, so he did get a tangle. We now have him in our breeding line up, this should give us a boost in the quality of their hair.

Teeth:

We needed strong healthy teeth that would last our breed a lifetime. We had constant vigilance in this regard. Our Veterinarian was bombarded with every question under the sun in regards to the canine teeth. We now have 9 year old Shima's with all of their teeth still in tact. Underbites were a real problem from the Shih-tzu line, so every breeder has been carefully examined though out its development, so that the underbite would be long gone in their history.
***In this we have succeeded!

No more snorting:

The Shih-tzu had a common problem with the nasal passages being much to small, which caused havoc for the poor dears. When they would get excited that snorting would rear its ugly head, and in some cased cause the dog in question to even loose conciseness, from the restriction of the air passage to the brain.
*** This is no longer a problem with the Shima's. We found relatively few that had any problems of this kind, and we were very careful not to breed this back into our precious Shima's.

Adoring Manner:

Shima's have a very calm manner they are playful, joyous, loyal, a bundle of joy to children of all ages. Traveling with these delightful dogs is a rich experience. Many of our Shima's are sold as companions to the elderly, and the world travelers, because of their eager to please personalities. These Shims are not a yappy hyper breed of dog, quite the contrary. Oh you can be sure they will bark when an intruder is present, but they quickly calm down when their owner just whispers HUSH to them.
***They love to travel, and the feed back I get mostly, is how they go every where the owners go. Even into restaurants. (some peoples kids)

Shima's are just wonderful.

Each puppy takes on his or her owners likes and dislikes. Mine eat string beans hehe.

Larger Eyes:

We are also trying to develop the larger eyes. Not as big as the Shih-tzu's but not as small as the Maltese.

Body Length:

On the coupling, we have been breeding in the longer coupling. Just a matter of preference for me. The short couplers have a bit of a harder time bearing their puppies.

Leg Height:

We have been working on the shorter legs, as aposed to the long lanky legs of the Maltese.

Stronger Bones:

We have also been working on the larger bones. The Maltese have very frail bones, and we want them to be stronger, because we are working to bring the breed into tea-cup and toy size.

Shima's Weight:

We use 8 LB females and 2 to 3 LB males. We only bread the 8 LB females, because whelping is hard on the tiny girls, and I am not willing to take a chance with their lives.

Shima's size will usualy run anywhere from 2 LB to 8 LB full grown. We can usually tell by the time they are 8 weeks old, just about how much they will weigh in one year. These tiny breeds are full grown between the age of 6 months and 8 months. A male will come in to his maturity around 8 months old.
